Is your dog scratching all of the time? Does your dog suffer from bald patches, scabs, or sores? Chances are, your dog is suffering from one of these common skin problems. The good news is that many skin problems can be successfully treated with help from our veterinarians at Costa Mesa Animal Hospital. If you live in or around Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Fountain Valley, or Huntington Beach and your dog is experiencing skin problems, bring him in for a visit with one of our veterinarians.
Allergies
When people suffer from allergies, they tend to have runny noses and red eyes. Dogs usually have itchy skin and sores. The most common things that dogs are allergic to include flea bites, pollen, and certain ingredients in food like soy, wheat gluten, eggs, and dairy products. Since the symptoms of allergies are similar to other conditions, your dog may need skin scrape tests or diagnostic blood work to eliminate these other conditions.
Ringworm
Ringworm gets its name from the red ring around the circular bald patches it leaves on your dog. Although it is called ringworm, it is actually a fungal infection, not a worm infestation. Ringworm is contagious, so all of your dog’s bedding needs to be washed. Refrain from kissing your dog until he is cured. Wash your hands when handling your dog. Treatments for this condition include creams, shampoos, and anti-fungal medication.
Mange
Many parasites cause scratching, but mange is perhaps the itchiest parasite of them all. Mange is caused by mites that burrow into the skin. They can make your dog truly miserable. There are two main types of mange, so a skin scrape test needs to be done to determine what kind of mange is affecting your dog. Sarcoptic mange is contagious. The medicated ointment helps to soothe the sores. Dips may be needed. Oral medication is often prescribed for this condition.
Yeast Infections
Dogs that keep scratching or rubbing their ears, or chewing on their paws, often develop yeast infections. Treatments for this condition include medicated shampoos, creams, sprays, and oral medication.
