Pet Surgery FAQ

If your pet is suffering from an infection or broken bone, they may need surgery. When you visit us at Costa Mesa Animal Hospital in Costa Mesa, CA, for a consultation, our team will answer any questions you may have about the procedure that is necessary for cat or dog. In the interim, we have answered some frequently asked questions about pet surgery to provide you with further insight.

What Type of Pet Surgeries Do You Perform?

Our vets perform various surgical procedures, including spaying and neutering, skin tumor removals, and a variety of other life-saving surgeries.

Why Am I Not Allowed to Feed My Pet Before Surgery?

Anesthesia can trigger the regurgitation of food from the stomach, which can put your pet’s life at risk during the procedure.  We recommend to avoid feeding your pet at least 8 to 10 hours before surgery. Before the procedure, we will perform a thorough physical exam before your pet is cleared for surgery. You can rest assured that your furry friend will be safe and comfortable before, during, and after.

What Type of Emergencies Might Require Surgery?

Some emergencies that may require surgery include bone fractures, internal bleeding, ingestion of foreign objects, urinary system complications, and twisting of digestive organs.

Is Anesthesia Safe for Pets?

Major surgical procedures require the use of anesthesia, which is administered via gas or intravenously. We use anesthetics your pet can quickly expel once the surgery ends. They will be sedated under our care and we’ll make sure they are comfortable and not experiencing adverse side effects when they wake up.

What Happens in Case a Complication Develops After Pet Surgery?

Our vets will closely observe your pet and take care of any possible complications that could occur after surgery immediately. We will also explain what to expect after surgery and provide guidance on how to monitor and care for them post-surgery.

What Aftercare Procedures Are Necessary After Pet Surgery?

As the pet owner, our vet will require you to closely monitor your pet and accommodate to their needs during recovery. The type and amount of aftercare that is needed will depend on the type of surgery that was performed.  Most pets are cleared to go home with a bandage wrapped around the surgical site and an E-collar to prevent wound licking. Your will need to offer prescription meds to your pet as directed to avoid pain and infection in the wound. Allow your pet to rest and avoid too much activity post-surgery.

Are Follow-up Appointments Necessary After Pet Surgery?

Our vets schedule regular follow-up appointments to assess how your pet is healing and their general health. These are necessary, as they allow our vets to monitor your pet's progress during recovery.
