Lameness and Limping
Pets, especially active dogs, are subject to some level of lameness and limping during their lives. Often, the behavior is short-term and goes away within several minutes, but other times, it remains and may increase in severity. As discussed below, whether and how quickly your pet needs to be seen by a veterinarian largely depends on the behavior's onset, duration, and severity. The good news is our Costa Mesa Animal Hospital team is here to help if your pet is injured. We serve Costa Mesa, CA, and surrounding communities with the pet care its pets may need to restore and preserve their health.
Gradual Versus Sudden Onset
The onset of lameness and limping in pets occurs gradually or with sudden onset. Problems that arise and worsen gradually are generally caused by a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis. While problems arising gradually seldom need emergency care, it may still be useful to seek veterinary attention. Take your pet to a vet if the limping or lameness lasts more than a short time, as early intervention may prevent prevent the condition from worsening.
Injury Severity
Sudden onset lameness and limping generally result from an acute injury or trauma. Sometimes, your pet will "walk it off" and be problem-free within the hour. When the lameness continues, the severity of the injury determines how quickly your pet needs to see a veterinarian. Urgent care, including pet surgery, may be needed for obvious signs of broken bones, dangling or dislocated limbs, swelling, or other traumatic injuries.
In cases of less severe injuries, the need for emergency (immediate) versus urgent care (within 24 to 48 hours) depends on your pet's behavior. Injured pets that otherwise behave normally require only urgent care.
